KNOW THY SELF, TO THY OWN SELF BE TRUE

The work in this exhibition was made during my eight week exchange at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University. The exhibition is in two parts, firstly the prints which I started working on as soon as I arrived at the Faculty, they are a continuation of the ideas I had been exploring in Australia. They touch on such notions as disfunction, disillusionment and impotence created by our social structures the prints therefore have no particular reference to Thailand.

The second and to me the more important part of the exhibition is more directly related to my experience in Thailand. It consists of 108 amulets, made from thinge that I collected during my stay in Thailand. Each amulet is attached by ribbon to a small Sa Paper envelope using sealing wax. The envelopes contain a short statement. You are asked to speculate on the meaning that might be contained within the envelope while contemplating the amulet. The title of this work is "Know Yourself and be True to Yourself." It is party autobiographical in the from of a diary of objects collected over the period of my stay in Thailand, but also it constitutes my observations of Thai people, sociely and culture.

I used the amulet form as it as a Talisman, something to reflect upon, to protect, to bring good luck and to contemplate. The objects within the amulets have littie or no monetary value but each holds for me a memory and or an idea that has great value to me. I hope others may also find something of value within this work.

I would like to thank Chiang Mai University, Faculty of Fine Arts, for making it possible for me to partioipate in an exchange programme. It has been a wonderful experience and I have learned much from it and made many frienda. I would also like to give my personal thanks to Num Dean - Faculty of Fine Arta. Ajan Kai and especilly Jame for all the help and hospitality offered to me. Thank you.
